There are more than 200 thousand newborn babies in Taiwan each year, of which 8~10% are born prematurely. Those babies, nearly 20 thousand for each year, and their parents are confronted with numerous challenges, frustrations and worries for the uncertain future.
As a matter of fact, under proper medical care, premature babies are able to lead a normal life. To help premature babies overcome difficulties and grow up healthily, Premature Baby Foundation of Taiwan was jointly founded by Mackay Memorial Hospitaland many other non-profit organizations in January, 1992

  PBF is dedicated to ensure every premature baby access to proper medical care of the best possible quality. The Foundation also seeks to raise awareness of prematurity as a serious problem, and educate the public to reduce the rate of premature births.
Financial Assistance
  PBF subsidizes medical care expenses for premature babies residing in 52 contracted hospitals, and medical equipment rental expenses after their discharge from hospitals.

  US$ 387,238 for home care facilities(since 1992)
Education to the public:
  PBF publishes a variety of materials to educate the public about prematurity, and how to prevent it.
Establishing the health networks of premature babies:
  PBF and 5 other Medical Centers jointly founded the "Medical Training Center of Prematurity" and provide a variety of services, including premature babies home care services, follow-up programs after discharge, and hosting many other activities with contracted hospitals.
  Premature babies home care services:
    Home care services is designed to provide phone counseling, to answer questions and give advises on how to handle preemies and offer assistance in interacting with professionals. We also provide resource for preemie parents and health care providers, parenting tips, development and growth assessment, nutrition and feeding, and various variety of prematurity research. We also designed a series training programs to our contracted hospitals.
  Follow-up programs after discharge:
    21 contracted hospitals with PBF provide follow-up programs for those born very prematurely or at very low birth weight under 1,500 g after discharge from NICU. It exists to track the progress of children who have an increased likelihood of developmental problems that tend to appear gradually over the first several years of life. Until 2007, we have 9,500 preemies accepted the follow-ups.
Medical education:
  PBF provides a wide range of education of opportunities for medical team members in order to improve the quality of medical care for premature babies. There are seminars, trainings and lectures in Taiwan, and visiting and training overseas.
Academic Research:
  PBF encourages medical team members to research the relevant topics of premature baby. There are 85 research articles supported by PBF since 1992.
Fund Raising:
  PBF raises funds and integrates every resource available for premature babies.
